Does your battery not have the same capacity as it did before?
- This could mean a few things:
- You battery might have one, or multiple failed cells
- Your battery might have corroded or damaged cables
- Your battery might need to be acid balanced. These are all affordable alternatives to replacing your battery!
The life of a battery is determined by many different factors. Some of these are directly related to the human aspect of daily operation, and maintenance. It is very important that you are following the charging, and discharging suggestions from your battery company. Over discharging, or incorrect charging methods can severely shorten battery life, and even cause overheating and internal damage to your expensive asset. These can all add to battery repair and battery reconditioning costs.
It is also important to stay on top of your battery watering needs. This is the number one factor for batteries not lasting until the typical 5 year life span. Many times, batteries do not get watered often enough, causing overheating and internal damage to one of more of the cells. As a way to combat this, users will install single point watering systems to aid in the watering process, as well as to speed up this task. This is especially helpful for larger fleet of batteries. This can reduce the need for battery repair or battery cell replacement.
Is your battery excessively dirty, or corroded? This is very hard on all of the battery components. Corrosion will cause the outer steel tray of the battery to disintegrate and become weak. Corrosion will also damage the lead parts of the battery, such as the cable ends and intercell connectors. Any time corrosion touches the outer battery tray and any lead component at the same time, this causes one or more cells to be shorted to the tray causing a drastic reduction in power, and damage to the affected cell(s). The above picture is of a very corroded battery.
